About Catriona

Picture
Orcadian fiddle player, singer and composer Catriona Price is at the forefront of the new wave of talent emerging from today's Scottish music scene.  Equally at home as a folk fiddler and classical violinist, Catriona graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2010 having spent her childhood in Orkney sessions and as a member of the young fiddle group "Hadhirgaan" under the guidance of Douglas Montgomery (Saltfishforty, The Chair).   Catriona was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2012.

Catriona left home at the age of seventeen to complete her final two school years at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh.  Having already been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and Camerata Scotland, Catriona became co-principal second violin of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain performing at the BBC Proms on live TV, as well as being princial second violin with the NYO's contemporary music ensemble the NYO Sinfonietta.  In 2005 she began touring Germany with the Irish band "Blue".

In 2006 Catriona joined forces harpist Esther Swift to form the duo Twelfth Day.  The duo soon began playing all over the UK and in 2010 released their debut album Northern Quarter to critical acclaim.
As well as her activities with Twelfth Day, Catriona plays with jazz guitarist Alex Roth as well as being part of the Scottish Art-Pop collective The Spolkestra.  She is a member of the Skara string quartet and in 2011 was selected to be part of the Cheltenham Festival Academy as well as the Britten-Pears Orchestra.  Catriona featured on the Discovery Chanel documentary Titanic: The Aftermath in 2012, and has undertaken extra work with the Orchestra of Opera North.

Catriona began writing tunes at an early age.  Several have been included in tune books and have been recorded by players around the world. Her tune and song writing continue to be a major part of her musical life.

Catriona is currently studying for a masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music with Richard Deakin.  She is generously supported by The Caird Travelling Scholarships, The Robertson Trust, The John Wates Charitable Trust, The Follett Trust and The Donald Dewar Arts Awards.
