Shell Story, the new mini-album by Twelfth Day is out now. It's a sister release to our last album The Devil Makes Three which came out in 2014, and features four remixes of tracks from that record, as well as three new ones. We were delighted that four of our friends, who also happen to be four of our favourite musicians, agreed to remix, and we have remixes by Fraction Man, The Reverse Engineer, Max Reinhardt and DJ Tudo on there. Last year we did an arrangement of a song by Franz Schubert called Romanze which is also included, as well as two new originals, an instrumental, Face To Face, and a song based on a George McKay Brown short story, which became the record's namesake, Shell Story. You can buy your copy over at our shop.

After a successful and hugely enjoyable debut at Orkney Folk Festival 2014, Fara headed into the studio in December to record a demo EP ahead of an appearance at Celtic Connections in January. We're looking forward to some double island festival fun in 2015 at Shetland and Orkney Folk Festivals, as well as shows at Cambridge and Tønder Festivals in the summer. More details here.

The Everlasting Swell
21.02.14 A couple of years ago I was really lucky that my friend Duncan Strachan, a beautiful composer, agreed to write me a piece. I was looking for something new and exciting for my final recital at the Royal Academy of Music, and decided it was a great excuse to ask Duncan to write something. I couldn't have been happier with what happened. A lovely wee piece for solo fiddle and loop pedal - The Everlasting Swell.
Here is a sneaky recording made by pal on his iPhone during my final recital at RAM in 2012. Hopefully we'll get to record it properly one day.

The Everything Is New Project
I'm delighted to have been part of this fantastic project by Edinburgh based arts collective Transgressive North. The project encompasses two albums - Sun Choir by Edinburgh band Marram, Boats, a compilation album featuring tracks made by amazing musicians from all over the world, and a film - Everything Is New. The whole project is in aid of the wonderful charity Scottish Love In Action which raises money to care for and support destitute children in India, and both albums and the film feature the children from the Light of Love Children's home in south-east India. Both albums also feature guest appearances by loads of great people including Jarvis Cocker, Irvine Welsh and Owen Pallett. I was really happy to contribute fiddles and a few little bits of vocals to Marram's Sun Choir album. Head over to Transgressive North's Bandcamp page to buy Sun Choir and Boats. Both mind blowing musical experiences, with all proceeds going straight to the children you'll hear. What more could you ask for?
12.03.14 I'm really pleased to be playing with new band The Rails. Fronted by Kami Thompson and James Walbourne, The Rails debut album Fair Warning comes out in April 2014 on Island Records, and I'm excited to be playing a whole host of dates with them this summer, including Green Man Festival and some support dates for Paul Weller in forests! Check out Kami and James singing Bonnie Portmore via this link. You can also pre-order Fair Warning there.

Twelfth Day - Routes to Roots
Catriona's fiddle and harp duo Twelfth Day are pleased to announce their international folk music sharing project Routes to Roots.
The project will see Catriona and Esther travel to four different countries, each on a different continent, sharing folk music traditions with local musicians in each place. They will collect sounds along the way, writing and releasing new music inspired by what they've heard and the experiences they've shared. They will then invite musicians from each of the four places over to the UK to record and tour a big collaboration binding together the music from the five different countries. The project sees them head to Quebec in Canada, Malawi, Brazil and Mongolia for a month each.
Speak From the Start is a collection of five cover songs Twelfth Day were inspired to create after being asked to cover Morrissey's You're The One For Me Fatty for BBC Radio Manchester's 40th birthday celebrations. They enjoyed the process of reworking a song different to their own style so much, that they decided to cover four more tracks, and the EP includes Twelfth Day's version of songs by Passion Pit, Blondie, Kanye West and Twin Atlantic as well as the Morrissey classic.
